Column Tray and Packing Hydraulics
Hydraulic calculations may be used to size the trays or packings for new columns and rate the performance for existing columns using the calculated loadings and properties. A column may be divided into several sections for the hydraulic calculations to allow for differences in the tray mechanical details, packing sizes, etc.
Usage
From the Column Main Window, push the Hydraulics/Packing button.
Starting, Ending Tray
Use the tabular form to define the column sections that you need to size or rate. The sections must not overlap;that is, a stage may only be rated or sized in one section. Normally, all sections are either rated for existing columns or sized for new columns. Note that the starting and ending stage numbers correspond to the theoretical trays used to define the column. See Number of Trays for more details. Hydraulic calculations may not be performed for the condenser and reboiler.
Internals
Select the type of column internals from the drop-down list. These may be Trays, Structured Packing or Random Packing.
Calculation Type
The drop-down list is used to select the desired calculation type, either Sizing or Rating. See Calculation Types for further information.
Enter Data
To enter information for the specified range of stages, click the corresponding Enter Data button. This opens the appropriate data entry window:
Column Structured Packing Rating
Column Structured Packing Sizing
Additional Information
Several column hydraulic parameters are available to other unit operations as variables and parameters. See Column Parameters Available for Cross Referencing for more details.
