Column Structured Packing Sizing

Criteria for sizing structured packing for a column section are entered in this window. See Structured Packing Calculations for more information.

Usage

From the Column Tray and Packing Hydraulics Window, define a column section in the table, select Structured Packing as the Internals and select the Sizing option in the Calculation Type drop-down list box.

Push the corresponding Enter Data button to enter information for the selected column section.

Manufacturer

Currently, Sulzer and Koch-Glitsch, LP are supported as manufacturers of packings.

The RATEFRAC algorithm supports only KOCH-GLITSCH packings (i.e., Sulzer packings are not supported).

Packing Type

Select the required type of packing from the drop-down list. See Structured Packing Types for details of the available Sulzer packings.

Sulzer no longer supports the packing types OPTIFLOW C.36, KERAPAK, and MELLADUR 250.Y/350.Y/450.Y. And these packing types are not supported in PRO/II.

For RATEFRAC, select the desired packing type from the KOCH-GLITSCH list.

Packing Height

You must enter either the HETP (Height Equivalent to a Theoretical Plate) or the Height of the packed section.

Approach to Maximum Capacity

The Approach to Maximum Capacity for the column is applicable only for Sulzer packings. This is expressed as a percentage of the column capacity. Separation efficiency is likely to be impaired if the approach exceeds 80%. 100% capacity is defined as a pressure drop of 10 mbar/m.

Fractional Approach to Flood

The Fractional Approach to Flood can be an input for KOCH-GLITSCH packings. It is the approach to flood expressed as a fraction of the flooding point.  The allowed values are greater than zero and less than one.

Perform Tray Structured Packing Sizing Calculations

Select the desired Tray Structured Packing Sizing Calculation option by clicking on the appropriate radio button. Normally, packing sizing calculations are performed to update the column pressure profile to the calculated tray pressure drops and re-calculate the column with the new profile. See Packing Rating/Sizing at Output or Calculation Time for description of the options.

Click RATEFRAC options… to pop up Column - RATEFRAC Packing Options dialog box.
