Column Random Packing Sizing

Criteria for sizing random packing for a column section are entered in this window. See Random Packing Calculations for more information.

Usage

From the Column Tray and Packing Hydraulics Window, define a column section in the table, select Random Packing as the Internals and select the Sizing option in the Calculation Type drop-down list box.

Push the corresponding Enter Data button to enter information for the selected column section.

Manufacturer

Currently, only KOCH-GLITSCH packings are supported. Koch-Glitsch, LP now owns the packings formerly supplied by the Norton Company. For many column algorithms, pre-configured data for the original Norton packings still is available by selecting Norton as the packing manufacturer.

For the RATEFRAC algorithm, only KOCH-GLITSCH packings are supported. (Packings listed under the manufacturer Norton are not available in RATEFRAC).

Packing Characteristics

The Packing Factor must be supplied. This can be either entered by the program for a predefined Type or specified directly. See Random Packing Characteristics for more details.

KOCH-GLITSCH Approach to Flood

This option in available only for KOCH-GLITSCH packing and RATEFRAC algorithm. If you want to model the column for flooding, check the Approach option and enter a value. The value allowed is greater than zero and less than 1.

Packing Height

The HETP may calculated by the FRANK method (default) or the Norton method. The Packing Size is required to calculate HETP. Alternatively, you may specify the HETP or Height directly. The relationship is:

HETP = Height / Number Of Packed Stages

Approach Calculations

The column diameter is normally calculated by an Approach to Flooding. If IMTP packing is selected, the diameter may be calculated from an Approach to Efficient Velocity.

Velocity Approach Data

The Design velocity is used in the sizing calculation. By default, the Maximum will be calculated and used with the default Approach to obtain the Design value from:

 Design = Maximum * Approach

Alternatively, you may specify a Maximum or enter the Design value directly.

Maximum Pressure Drop

You may specify a maximum allowable Pressure Drop for this Section or Pressure Drop per Unit Length. This restriction is in addition to the Approach specification. If this is entered, the most limiting case (pressure drop or approach) will be used to size the column. By default, there are No Pressure Constraints.

Pressure Drop Method

You may change the default Norton method to the Tsai method.

For KOCH-GLITSCH packings, the KOCH-GLITSCH pressure drop method is the only available method.

Perform Tray Random Packing Sizing Calculations

Select the desired Tray Random Packing Sizing Calculation option by clicking on the appropriate radio button. Normally, packing sizing calculations are performed to update the column pressure profile to the calculated tray pressure drops and re-calculate the column with the new profile. See Packing Rating/Sizing at Output or Calculation Time for description of the options.

Click RATEFRAC options ... to pop up Column - RATEFRAC Packing Options dialog box.
