Units of Measure System - Overview

PRO/II offers great flexibility in the Units of Measure (UOM) available for entering data and writing reports. Since it recognizes more common units (and many of the less common as well) you can usually use any available data directly, without having to convert it to dimensions recognized by the program. Additionally, you can generate output reports in the same units as the input data and/or an additional set of alternate units.

UOM Library

In PROVISION, SIMSCI’s Graphical User interface for PRO/II, a list of units of measure sets can be created, which can be used in other simulation problems. For an individual problem, you can select one set each for entering data and writing output reports from this list. PRO/II provides English (the default), Metric, and SI units of measurement sets as defaults. You can, in addition to these sets, create new sets according to your needs. See Units of Measure Lists for creating a new set or for editing an existing set.

Default UOM sets

After you have created the necessary UOM sets in the library, you can select the set to be used as the default in all the simulation problems using the Default Sets of Units of Measure Window. You are allowed to select one set for the input data. Output report can be generated with the same units as input and/or an alternative set of output units (i.e. you can produce two output reports).

UOMs for Input

You can modify the dimensional units selected for the input in the current simulation problem by selecting the "Input / Units of Measure" command or by pushing the image\UOM2.gif button. This displays the Default Units of Measure for Problem Data Input Window which contains all the parameters whose data can be specified at input time, and their default selections. The default selections correspond to the UOM set selected in the "Default Sets of Units of Measure" window.

Additionally, if a data value in one of the fields of a data entry window is available in a unit different from the selected set, you can change the dimensional unit for that field alone. This is done using the Unit Of Measure Selection Window which is displayed when the UOM button on the Toolbar is pushed. However, PRO/II converts the entered data corresponding to the unit in the default input set when the OK button is pushed for that window.

UOMs for Output

The dimensional units for the output report can be specified by selecting the "Output / Report Format / Units of Measure" menu item. The Default Units of Measure for Problem Output Report Window is displayed where you can specify the report to be generated with the same units as input and/or an alternative set of output units. If output units are selected explicitly, they default to the selections contained in the UOM set selected for output report in the "Default Sets of Units of Measure" window and can be edited as desired.
