Column Side Heaters/Coolers

A heat source or sink may be placed on any tray of a column. A negative sign is used to denote a cooling duty; a positive sign is used to denote a heating duty.

Usage

From the Column Main Window, push the Heaters and Coolers button.

Enter the data for the Side heaters/coolers in the Column Side Heaters/Coolers Window. There is no limit on the number of heaters/coolers that may be defined. Note that side heaters and coolers associated with pumparound streams may not be defined in this window. See Column Pumparounds for further information.

Tray

The tray number for the side heater/cooler.

Name

Each side heater/cooler must be given a name for reference purposes. You can change the default name, if desired.

Duty

The duty for the side heater/cooler in the dimensional units displayed, with a positive sign indicating a heat source and a negative sign indicating a heat sink. The dimensional unit may be changed using the Unit-Of-Measure Selection Window, which is displayed when the UOM button on the Toolbar is pushed.

Alternately, instead of entering a value for a duty, the numeric value may be referenced using the Define system relative to any available unit operation or stream parameter calculated elsewhere in the simulation. See Column Parameters Available for Cross-Referencing for more details.

Phase

This field is enabled only when the RATEFRAC algorithm is selected.

User can select the phase from the drop down list. It is applicable only for non-equilibrium trays.

Heat Leak Button

Push this button to display the Column Heat Leaks Window. This window is used to specify heat leaks for non-adiabatic column operation. Heat leaks cannot be specified for liquid-liquid extraction columns.

Flash Zones Button

Push this button to display the Column Flash Zone Window. This window is used to specify flash zones (i.e., fired heaters) for a heater on an I/O column.

Note: Heat leak and Flash zones are not supported by the RATEFRAC algorithm.
