The Reaction Data Section allows you to define sets of chemical reactions. These Reaction Sets can be used in Reactor Unit Operations and Reactive Distillation Columns.
You may define any number of Reaction Sets. Each Set may include any number of reactions. A set may be used in more than one unit operation. A Reactor can use only one set but Reactive Distillation units may use multiple sets.
Components
Before you define Reaction Sets you must have selected the participating components - both reactants and products - in the Component Data Section.
In a reaction some components are lost and some are formed. The changes are reflected in the Overall Flowsheet Mass Balance in the Miscellaneous Report Options.
There are four classes of reaction: Conversion, Equilibrium, Kinetic and Gibbs. Reactor units only use one class of reaction. Reactive distillation columns may include conversion, equilibrium and/or kinetic reactions.
Reaction Data
The data requirements for the reaction classes differ. A reactor or column can use any Reaction Set and any reaction(s) within a Reaction Set. A Reaction can be used in any reactor unit or column.
This means that you may enter Conversion, Equilibrium and Kinetic data for any reaction. If a Reactor uses a reaction, that reaction must have the data that are required by the type of Reactor. The class of reaction is specified within the reactive distillation column and different classes may be used within a column.
Some data must be entered in the Reaction Data Section, some must be entered in the unit operation and some may be entered in both.
Stoichiometric Data must be entered in the Reaction Data section. Stoichiometric data are required for columns and all reactor types except Gibbs Reactors.
Heat of Reaction is normally calculated by PRO/II from pure component heats of formation. You choose to over-ride the calculated heat of reaction by entering data in the Reaction Data section.
Extent of Reaction Data is required for all reaction classes except Gibbs. Extent of Reaction Data are in two parts:
Data general to a Reaction which can be entered either in the Reaction Data section or in the individual unit operation. Data entered in the unit operation over-rides data entered in the Reaction Data section but for that unit only
Data specific to a unit which must be entered in the individual unit operation.
