Pipe Line Sizing

This window is used to supply the required data for performing a line sizing calculation. This calculation type selects the line size required for a specified minimum outlet pressure or a maximum pressure drop. You may provide a set of pipe sizes and PRO/II selects the best available size from this list. Note that fittings cannot be included in a sizing calculation.

Usage

To display this window, select the line sizing option and push the Line Sizing Data button from the Pipe Main Window.

Primary Sizing Criterion

The sizing criterion can be supplied either as the Maximum Pressure Drop through the line or the Minimum Outlet Pressure. Select the desired option and supply its value in the appropriate field. PRO/II uses this value for determining the required line size based on other calculated conditions in the pipe unit.

Maximum Velocity

Optionally, you may specify the maximum allowable average fluid velocity as an additional constraint. If given, this velocity is never exceeded by the sizing algorithm, even if the primary sizing criterion has not been reached. If omitted, the pipe unit uses only the primary sizing criterion to converge the sizing calculations.

Note that instead of entering a value for maximum pressure drop and/or velocity, they may be referenced using the Define system relative to any available unit operation or stream parameter calculated elsewhere in the simulation.

Line Size List

You may optionally provide a list of line sizes from which PRO/II must make the selection. This line size can be supplied either as line inside diameters or as nominal pipe sizes in inches. If you do not wish to supply either of the line size types, PRO/II carries out the calculations based on a default set of line inside diameters.

If you want to supply a set of line inside diameters, overwrite the default values provided in the Inside Diameters table. You can use the Clear All button to erase all the values currently in the table. Use the Restore Defaults button if you wish to restore the default diameters. Note that at least one diameter must be supplied in the table.

If you wish to supply nominal pipe sizes, select this option and push the Enter Data button. The Nominal Pipe Sizes Window is displayed where you can select the desired pipe sizes and schedule numbers. PRO/II does not supply any default nominal pipe sizes.
