Conversion Reactor - Extent of Reaction

Use this window to define the fractional conversion for each reaction in the selected reaction set.  Each reaction is listed in the table and data is required for all of them. If you wish to exclude any reaction from the calculations, simply set its conversion to zero.

Usage

Multiple Reaction Conversion Basis

This determines whether the conversion of multiple reactions in series is calculated from the concentration in the Feed or on the amount present in the Reaction. The reactions are calculated in the order in which they are entered and so, if the option is Reaction, the conversion of components which appear as reactants and products will depend on the order of the reactions in the reaction set.

The Default is set to Feed for single, parallel or series-parallel reactions and to Reaction for series reactions.

Conversion Using A Designated Base Component

The extent of reaction in each individual reaction is defined in terms of the conversion of a Base Component. The equation

Cvnbase = A + B*T + C*T2

defines the extent of reaction for the selected base component, which must be a reactant (not a product) in the reaction.

The default coefficient values are A=1.0, B=0.0, and C=0.0, which specifies complete conversion of the Base Component, independent of temperature. Conversions of other components, both reactants and products, obey the reaction stoichiometry but are scaled according to the extent of conversion of the base component.

Alternatively, instead of specifying the A coefficient directly, you may relate it to another flowsheet parameter using the Define system.

Conversion Without A Base Component:  The NONE Option

Each list for selecting a base component also includes the option None, meaning no base component is selected. In these cases, the stoichiometric coefficients represent the absolute amounts of the reacting components created or consumed. This eliminates the scaling applied by the extent of reaction of the base component, but the reaction proceeds according to the stoichiometry.

To prevent a reaction from participating in the reactor calculations, designate any reactant as the Base Component and set all three conversion coefficients (A, B, and C) to zero.  In a keyword input file, simply remove or comment out the BASE statement of each reaction to eliminate.
