Batch Distillation - Condenser HX

This window allows configuration of the condenser when it is modeled as a simple heat exchanger.

Condenser HX Data

Heat exchanger data, including Area, U-Value, and Tolerance for heat balance calculations, may be set here. Also, the coolant (utility) side Thermodynamic method may be specified. The default value for the heat balance tolerance is 5.0E-4.

HX Geometry

Additional data, such as the number of tube and shell passes, or FT factor, may be entered.

The number of tube passes must be an even number or 1. Typically it is always twice the number of shell passes. The number of shell passes may be any positive integer value. The default value for tube passes is 2, and the default value for shell passes is 1. If shell passes are changed, the number of tube passes is changed to twice the number of shell passes.

FT factor may be entered instead of the number of shell and tube passes. This is convenient when a value is known for a given HX, or when a complex HX is represented by the simple model available here. Typical FT values range between 0.5 to 1.0. FT values outside the range of 0.5 and 1.2 generate an error. When an FT factor value is entered, the shell and tube-pass entries are disabled.
