Pump Unit Operation - Technical Information

The pump unit increases the pressure of an incompressible fluid flowing through a pipe. PRO/II calculates the resulting temperature change and the work required to accomplish this. Note that for handling compressible fluids, substitute a compressor unit for the pump.

Calculation Method

The GPSA pump equation is used to calculate the horsepower required by the pump to increase the pressure of the fluid. The work done on the fluid is added to the inlet enthalpy, and an adiabatic flash calculation is performed to determine the temperature of the outlet stream.

VLLE calculations do not apply and thus are not available to the pump unit.

Feed and Product Streams

The pump may have any number of feed streams. If the composite feed to the pump has any vapor, a warning message will be displayed. The inlet thermal condition is determined by an adiabatic flash calculation at the lowest feed stream pressure.

The pump may have only a single liquid product stream.
