Calculated Phases

This entry is used to select the equilibrium phases present in the column.

Usage

The appropriate phase system is selected from the drop down list box in the Column Main Window. Only those phase combinations that are supported by the column algorithm that is selected will be available. In addition, the thermodynamic system must support the phase option that is selected. The default option for distillation algorithms is one vapor phase and one liquid phase.

If the Liquid-Liquid algorithm is selected, the phase system is set to liquid/liquid and cannot be changed.

Further Explanation

The vapor-liquid-liquid option is available for the Sure and Chemical algorithms for the case when one vapor phase is in equilibrium with two liquid phases. The liquid phases are also in equilibrium with each other. Liquid draws from the column may consist of either liquid or the equilibrium mixture of both liquids on the tray.

The vapor-liquid-water option is available for the Sure and Enhanced I/O algorithms for the special case in which a second liquid phase which is water is present on some or all of the trays in the column. For this option, water draw trays are allowed in the column, as well as at the condenser.
